TAKE CARE OF YOUR ENVIRONMENT, TAKE CARE OF YOU

Environmental health is fundamental to your quality of life. In this article I focus on the negative aspects of the environment that influence the health of you and your loved ones.  And I point out some solutions that depend on you, indoors.

Did you know that health and the environment are closely related?

The water we drink, the air we breathe, the noise we are exposed to, radiation, the electrical installations at home or in the workplace, hygiene and cleaning products… Our daily life, our everyday life, is made up of factors that can affect our well-being. We do not see them, but they are there. If you take care of your environmental health, you will be taking care of your own and you will gain in quality of life.

We live in the age of technology, the advances and innovations in this sector are increasing, but so is our exposure to its risks.

Nowadays it is not enough to take care of ourselves inside and out, but we must also look after the quality of our surroundings, our environmental health. It is not only essential to go to a specialist when something hurts or to maintain an optimal level of hygiene, but we must also do our homework in everything related to our environment.

What are these tasks?

  • Collect and recycle the waste we generate.
  • Use water rationally.
  • Consume energy responsibly.
  • Consume quality food.
  • Use environmentally friendly cleaning products, etc.

The concept of environmental health is not new

According to the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) definition, it is “the discipline concerned with all the physical, chemical and biological factors external to a person. In other words, it encompasses environmental factors that could affect health and is based on the prevention of disease and the creation of environments conducive to health. Therefore, any behaviour not related to the environment is excluded from this definition, as well as any behaviour related to the social and economic environment and to genetics”.

The most obvious negative effects on our health are, unfortunately, already part of our daily lives and some, or some of them, will be familiar:

  • Headaches.
  • Stress.
  • Insomnia.
  • Asthma.
  • Irritability.
  • Lack of concentration.

In some cases, according to international research, these environmental factors can even trigger neurological developmental disorders, immune system disorders or childhood cancer (tobacco smoke, exposure to solvents by parents can be the cause).

Humans are absolutely dependent on the environment and are therefore highly vulnerable to environmental changes. Climate change, for example, is causing and will cause major changes in the health of the world’s population if we do not stop it drastically.

The solution to this is in our hands and it is not complicated. Of course we cannot eliminate all polluting factors, because we live in a society in which they are widespread. But we can act locally. At home, in the office, in the business we run. It all adds up.

Fortunately, we can all do our bit to repair damage to environmental health. And what’s more, there are professional options to considerably improve the environmental health of your home or workplace and thus improve your quality of life.
