In my desire to contribute to the dissemination of an aspect until recently forgotten, I want to share with you the 25 principles of Construction Biology, published by the Building Biology Institute (USA).

It is a set of criteria to create healthy living environments, connecting with nature, sustainable and beautiful. To do this, they take into account ecological, economic and social aspects in the choice of materials and in the design of living spaces.

THE 25 PRINCIPLES OF CONSTRUCTION BIOLOGY

INDOOR CLIMATE

01.- Reduce polluting and irritating substances and provide enough fresh air.

02.- Reduce the presence of toxic fungi, yeasts and bacteria, as well as dust and other allergens.

03.- Use materials with a neutral or pleasant smell.

04.- Minimize electromagnetic fields and high frequency waves.

05.- Prioritize radiant heat for heating.

INTERIOR AND ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN

06.- Observe harmonious proportions and shapes.

07.- Stimulate sensory perceptions: sight, hearing, smell and touch.

08.- Favor lighting and spectrum conditions close to natural light and use flicker-free lamps.

09.- Consider knowledge of physiology and ergonomics.

10.- Promote local and regional building and craft culture.

ECOSOCIAL HABITAT

11.- Design infrastructure with a balanced combination of uses: short distances to work centers, public transport, schools, shops, etc.

12.- Promote a way of living that satisfies human needs and protects the environment.

13.- Provide sufficient green space to rural and urban residential areas.

14.- Strengthen local self-sufficiency and the participation of local networks and service providers.

15.- Select construction sites that are not contaminated by harmful waste, sources of radiation, pollution and noise.

CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT

16.- Use natural, non-toxic materials with as little radioactivity as possible.

17.-Ensure a balanced proportion between thermal insulation and heat accumulation, as well as between surface temperature and interior air.

18.- Use hygroscopic materials.

19.- Minimize the moisture content of new construction.

20.- Optimize the conditioning and acoustic insulation of spaces (including infrasound).

ENVIRONMENT, ENERGY AND WATER

21.- Minimize energy consumption and use renewable sources.

22.- When building or renovating, avoid negative impacts on the environment.

23.- Conserve natural resources and protect flora and fauna.

24.- Favor local construction systems, choose materials and life cycles with the best possible ecological balance.

25.- Ensure the most optimal quality possible of drinking water.
